Founded in 1927 by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina, Cassina is an unrivalled force in creating original contemporary furniture. Meticulously producing pieces by noted European designers and 20th-century masters, Cassina perfectly fuses industrial technology with artisan manufacturing and classic design.
Committed to showcasing the work of leading figures in the Modern movement, Cassina launched the I Maestri Collection in 1964. Boasting faithful reissues from the likes of Le Corbusier, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Charlotte Perriand and Frank Lloyd Wright, the collection also features updated prototypes and forgotten classics. Not neglecting contemporary designers, it works with icons including Philippe Starck, Rodolfo Dordoni, and Michael Anastassiades to create exquisite pieces.
The manufacturer behind classic pieces such as the LC4 Chaise Longue, the 637 Utrecht Armchair, the Red and Blue Chair and the 280 Zig-Zag Chair, Cassina is honoured with designs in the permanent collections at Paris’ Pompidou Centre, New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Vitra Design Museum. Through the work of contemporary architects and designers, Cassina continues to sit at the forefront of design.
280 Zig-Zag Chair
Designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1934 and now produced by Cassina in a natural ash finish, the iconic 280 Zig-Zag Chair was originally designed for the Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht.
One of the earliest examples of cantilevered design, the chair sees its normal legs replaced with a single sheet of wood to resemble the letter Z. Expertly crafted using beautifully-grained natural ash wood, the Zig-Zag Chair showcases excellent carpentry with detailed dovetail joints for a sharp finish.
Embodying pure abstraction, the chair is widely regarded as one of the most important experimental chairs of its time and is integral to the heritage of the Dutch de Stijl movement.
